Karen Hochman is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She has devoted her career to helping adults with serious mental illness. For many years, she directed the Focus Intensive Outpatient Program at Grady Hospital. She has now joined the staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
In 1999 she published an article in Schizophrenia Bulletin titled “First-Person Account: Coming Apart—A Tribute to Mark.” It describes the life and death (by suicide) of her older brother Mark, who had a diagnosis of schizophrenia. The article speaks to Karen’s healing and recovery process, as well as her sadness and pain. This moving tribute can be found at http://schizophreniabulletin.oxfordjournals.org/content/25/1/183.full.pdf.
